Partners to Unveil Sign and Dedicate Spring Creek Canyon on Sept. 30
September 20, 2011
On Friday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m., the multi-partnered Spring Creek Canyon Cooperative Management Coalition will unveil signs and an informational kiosk to greet visitors to more than 1,800 acres being jointly managed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the state Department of Corrections, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and The Pennsylvania State University and Benner Township.

The event will take place at the Shiloh Road Spring Creek Bridge area, and is adjacent to the Benner Spring State Fish Hatchery, 1735 Shiloh Rd., State College, PA 16801.

During the event, statements and presentations will be made by representatives of the various partners, as well as Sen. Jake Corman (R-Centre), Rep. Michael Hanna (D-Clinton) and Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre).

Previously part of the Department of Corrections’ Rockview State Correctional Institution, much of the 1,800-acre property has been closed to the public.  However, Act 55 of 2010 enabled the land to be open to the public and to be jointly managed by the Spring Creek Canyon Cooperative Management Coalition.  A 4.4-mile main trail will provide access to many previously unseen views of Spring Creek, as well as offer recreational opportunities such as hiking and biking.

Benner Township manages a portion of the land designated as a recreational area; the Game Commission manages a portion of the land as a terrestrial and aquatic wildlife resource management area, which also is known as State Game Land 333; the Fish and Boat Commission manages the controlled limited access area and nearby hatchery; and Penn State University oversees the agricultural research and management area.

The mission of the Fish and Boat Commission is to protect, conserve, and enhance the Commonwealth’s aquatic resources and provide fishing and boating opportunities. For more information about fishing and boating in Pennsylvania, please visit our website at
